New Westminster police are looking for the public's help after a woman was attacked and sexually assaulted in public Monday night.

According to Sgt. Diana McDaniel, the woman parked her car on Eighth Street next to New Westminster Secondary School just before 8: 30 p.m. As she exited her vehicle, she was confronted by an unknown man who grabbed her, pushed her to the ground and sexually assaulted her. The woman reported the incident to police afterwards.

The suspect is described as a white male in his 40s with a short, stocky build and "not fit looking." He has short dark hair, and was wearing a camouflage jacket at the time of the attack.

McDaniel said Tuesday that the victim is doing OK after the attack, and police are treating the case as a high priority.

"Our major crime unit has been working on it all night. They were called out,' she said. "They are continuing to work on it. I know there is a sergeant and two investigators that have been working on it all night and are continuing to work on it this morning."

The age of the victim has not been released.
