A Surrey firm has been fined for exposing its workers to a 20-foot fall while re-roofing a two-storey New Westminster home.

A construction company was recently fined by B.C.'s workplace safety watchdog for exposing its roofers to a potential fall of 20 feet at a New Westminster home.

Two PR Peter Roofing Ltd. employees were wearing harnesses while re-roofing a two-storey house in the city but neither were connected to lifelines, WorkSafeBC stated.

The Surrey business was setback $2,500 for the high-risk violation, according to a public report published online.

WorkSafeBC explained an inspector saw the workers on the sloped roof of the New West residence unattached to the lines installed, creating an unsafe fall risk.

As well, the report said ladders on site did not extend beyond the required distance needed for employees to safely access the upper landing of the house.

"The firm failed to ensure fall protection was used and failed to provide its workers with the information, instruction, training, and supervision necessary to ensure their health and safety, both high-risk violations," the report added.

"These were all repeated violations."

The four-figure fine was imposed on June 25, WorkSafeBC said.
