Society seeking support

Non-profit group looking for donations to help homeless during the winter season

The Lookout Emergency Aid Society could use a helping hand in its attempt to reach out to those in need.

The society is now offering the extreme weather shelter in New Westminster, a program that aims to reduce the risk of illness, injury and death on nights of extreme weather conditions.

Dave Brown, community services manager with the Lookout, said the society welcomes donations of food to help with the extreme weather shelter, which has opened on more than nine evenings this winter.

"What we are looking for is stuff we can put into a microwave," he said. "There is no cooking facilities downstairs."

The society offers the extreme weather shelter in the basement of the Cliff Block at 606 Clarkson St.

"We had 19 people last night," Brown told The Record Monday. "That's average."

According to Brown, the number of people the extreme weather shelter has been attracting has been between the high teens to low 20s during the nights it has opened. Numbers are expected to rise with the cooler temperatures forecast this week.

"Any donation would be very helpful," Brown said.

Brown said the goal is to give folks something to eat when they arrive at the shelter in the evening, and to feed them in the morning before they depart. In addition to food, the society also welcomes volunteers who could help with the setup/take down of the temporary shelter and to help provide food to those attending the shelter.

"We could really use some volunteers to help out," Brown said.
