Were you a student at Ecole Herbert Spencer Elementary School?

If so, Spencer staff want to hear from you. The school is gearing up to celebrate its 100-year anniversary in June and wants to include former students' memories to post on a "walk down memory lane."

Alumni (I am one of them) are asked to email principal, Tracy Fulton, at [email protected],mail or drop off their memory write-ups at the school -605 Second St., New Westminster, B.C. V3L 5R9.

"Your memory will be recorded and displayed for others to share, and maybe even remembered by others," Fulton said in an email. "Please share this news with anyone you know who attended Herbert Spencer these past 100 years. We hope to reach as many alumni as possible."

The school is holding its 100th year celebration on June 8 and 9. Check the school's website, district. sd40.bc.ca,for more information.

HOWAY HELPS OUT

Students at F.W. Howay Elementary School are helping the homeless keep warm this winter.

The school recently held a clothing drive for its Howay Helping Hands project.

This is the second year in a row that the school has gathered up warm outerwear to help the homeless.

"The outcome was outstanding," Howay librarian Janet Dupuis said. "Hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, coats and boots were collected. Many of the items were brand new, and the total collection covered four long tables. The students were so pleased with the outcome as evident as they passed by the collection tables in the hall."

Dupuis' library lessons included presentations and discussions around awareness of those who are homeless and facing winter's bite.

The students were "keen and eager to help," Dupuis said.

Four grade 4/5 students helped to bag the items and bring them to Cliff Block at Lookout Emergency Aid Society in New Westminster.

"The director stated that these items were literally life saving," said Dupuis. "This will hopefully be a yearly goal for F.W. Howay."

Howay Helping Hands will continue to plan more outreach efforts throughout the year, she said.

POSITIVE LESSONS

Core Education and Fine Arts (CEFA) in New Westminster is participating in today's (Feb. 29) anti-bullying event.

The junior kindergarten is also teaching its children to read and appreciate literacy, CEFA vice-principal Joanna Cogswell said in an email.

The school is reaching out to the larger community and having a book drive for another child-care centre that is in need.
