A dog that went missing earlier today after a car was stolen in New West has been located in Richmond.
At 10:30 this morning, the New Westminster Police Department appealed to the public for information that could lead to the recovery of a stolen dog and a car. A border collie named Zoey was in the back seat of the car when it was stolen.
“Zoey was spotted running in and out of traffic near the Westminster Highway in Richmond,” said Hailey Finnigan, the police department’s communications coordinator, in an update to the Record. “A kind-hearted commuter picked her up, and later today she’ll be reunited with her owner.
Police are investigating after receiving a report of a stolen car in the early morning hours of Monday, Jan. 15.
The victim told police his 2012 black Fiat 500 Sport was stolen from the 800 block of Carnarvon Street with his six-year-old border collie in the rear seat of the vehicle, stated a press release from the New Westminster Police Department.
The theft occurred at approximately 12:50 a.m. this morning.
“Zoey’s owner is extremely upset, and understandably he’s concerned for the well-being of his beloved pet,” said NWPD Sgt. Andrew Leaver in this morning’s news release. “We’re asking the public to share this story and to help us reunite this man and his dog. If you see what you believe to be this stolen vehicle or Zoey we ask that you call 911.”
The license plate of the stolen Fiat 500 Sport is TT2 51D. The stolen border collie, named Zoey, is brown and white with freckles, a red nose, and a collar.
Police are currently searching the nearby area for CCTV footage and would like to speak to anyone who has information about this theft.
Finnigan said it’s not unusual for people to travel with their pet.
“We aren’t in a position to comment on how long the dog had been in the car,” she said in an email to the Record. “What’s most important is that Zoey is reunited with her owner. If anyone sees Zoey or the stolen black 2012 Fiat 500 Sport with the license plate TT2 51D, they’re asked to call 911 without delay.”
Anyone with information about the theft can call NWPD investigators at 604-525-5411.
