Got some ideas for bringing New Westminster’s uptown parklet to life? There’s a grant available to help.
New Westminster’s Uptown Business Association is offering microgrants to community organizers who want to host activities in the uptown plaza space at Belmont and Sixth streets.
The colourfully painted space, with seating areas, can accommodate a range of public activities — and the Uptown Business Association wants to hear from folks with creative plans to fill the space with life in August and September.
The group is working with the City of New Westminster to encourage activities that are open to the community and bring “fun and positive energy” to the parklet space, the association’s website notes.
Grant amounts will depend on the costs of the event in question — with a range of $100 to $1,000, based on demonstrated need.
“The goals of the program are to support positive, community-based, inclusive, and barrier-free activities in the space,” the business association’s website explains.
The activities can be passive — think art shows, book exchanges or live sketching — or active, such as free dance classes, performances, craft markets or board game tournaments.
The events should be small to medium-sized, since the parklet capacity can’t exceed 200 people, and private events or those with paid admission aren’t eligible.
If you have an idea that might work, check out all the eligibility details and information at the Uptown Business Association website.
