Teen charged in gun threat

Fourteen-year-old NWSS student made comments about possibly having a gun at school

A 14-year-old youth was charged with three counts of uttering threats after an incident at New Westminster Secondary School last Friday.

On March 2, just after 2: 30 p.m., several New Westminster police officers and the municipal integrated emergency response team responded to a complaint of a student who had made comments to other students about possibly having a gun.

Police set up a perimeter around the school and soon confirmed that a firearm was not seen by either student.

According to the police, the school was not locked down.

The New Westminster Police emergency response team conducted a search of the school to confirm that it was clear of any threats.

According to a police press release, the New Westminster Police Service's major crime unit conducted an investigation that has resulted in a 14-year old youth being charged with three counts of uttering threats.

The youth is currently in custody but is expected to be released into the care of his parents in the near future.

Police are continuing their investigation into the incident and are advising everybody at the school that threats are taken seriously and police will respond accordingly to ensure the safety of students, faculty, staff and the public.
