Three occupants of a late-night fire in a downtown highrise escaped unharmed.
New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services received multiple reports of a structure fire in a building at 98 10th St. just after 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 21
Acting fire Chief Brad Davie said several people were outside the building when fire crews arrived. Black smoke could be seen coming out of a suite on the eighth floor.
“Three occupants were asleep in the unit when the fire started but managed to escape without harm,” he said. “All occupants from the unit have been accounted for.”
According to Davie, fire crews were able to contain the fire to the unit involved but its occupants have been displaced; the fire department’s emergency social services team secured temporary accommodations for the occupants.
“The cause of the fire is still under investigation,” he said.
