Lots of people enjoy unconditional love from pets, but sometimes they found that coming up with a good furry companion’s name may be a lot harder than they think.
For the seventh year in a row, Rover, an international pet sitting and dog walking network, released its annual survey of this year’s most popular dog names.
The top male dog names stayed the same with Charlie, Max, Cooper, Milo, Buddy and Tucker holding onto the top spots this year. And Bella and Luna led amongst female dog names.
The survey shows that most pet owners opt to name their pets after homegrown celebrities and their favourite TV characters.
According to Rover, the name Finn is up 76.3 per cent compared to 2018 after Canadian actor Finn Wolfhard became well-known for his role as Mike in the Netflix hit Stranger Things.
Meanwhile, another celebrity name Seth Rogen is up 500 per cent in dogs – the increase connects to his involvement as a “guest voice” on Vancouver’s transit system in 2018.
The survey also found that Game of Thrones-related names surged in popularity in 2019, especially the name Khaleesi has become 300 per cent more popular than the year prior.
“The names we give our pets provide a peek into our passions, aspirations, happy places, and guilty pleasures, reinforcing what we at Rover know to be true: our pets are as unique as the names we lovingly bestow upon them,” said Kate Jaffe, trend expert for Rover.
In addition, the survey notes that there is a 33 per cent spike in dogs named Mary Jane and Stoney following last year’s cannabis legalization.
Rover’s Top Pet Names 2019 survey is based on the analysis of millions of user-submitted pet names provided by owners online.
