This weekend marks the celebration of National Indigenous People’s Day and the start of summer.

The Record has rounded up some events work checking out this weekend in New Westminster. Here are our top picks for June 21 to 23:

Friday, June 21

National Indigenous People's Day

Celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day at this year’s event, which features cultural entertainment, physical activities, arts and crafts, Indigenous vendors and storytelling. This free, all-ages event is hosted in collaboration with the Spirit of the Children Society, Qayqayt First Nation and the City of New Westminster.

  • Where: Moody Park, 600 Eighth St.
  • Details: No tickets needed – just show up at Moody Park anytime between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Firefighters’ Shred-athon

Dispose of all your old documents at the New Westminster Firefighters' Charitable Society’s annual community shred-athon. The drive-thru event, hosted by local firefighters, provides on-site shredding – with donations supporting a variety of community programs.

Vancouver Retro Gaming Expo 2024

Check out the Vancouver Retro Gaming Expo, which includes free-play gaming; a vendor hall and artist alley; musical performances; guest panels and performances; and gaming tournaments.

Super Saturday – Sturgeon Survival!

Learn about the “Ghosts of the Fraser” at Super Saturdays, which offers activities that explore different features of the Fraser River. The white sturgeon is featured at this month’s event.

Traditional Ukrainian Dinner

Take a break from cooking and enjoy a home-cooked Ukrainian dinner at this month’s Perogies for Peace event, featuring perogies, cabbage rolls, borscht, and sausage. You can dine in or get it to go; fresh and frozen food is available.

This outdoor bash includes: beer; a wine lounge area courtesy of Pacific Breeze; food trucks and ice cream; DJs and a roving magic show; a pop-up vinyl record market; and a kids play and craft area.
