A huge explosion on Surrey’s waterfront caught the attention of many New West residents on Monday night.
Local residents took to social media on Oct. 24 to see what had caused their homes to shake. Some reported hearing several loud explosions.
The incident occurred on a small island in the Fraser River near Surrey’s Tannery Park – a site across the Fraser River from Westminster Pier Park.
“On Oct. 24 at approximately 10:35 p.m., a Surrey RCMP officer discovered a fire on a small parcel of land off the shore of Tannery Park. The area was not accessible from land so the Coast Guard was called out to assist,” said the Surrey RCMP in a statement to the Record. “Officers attended the area and did not locate anyone in the vicinity.”
Some social media reports stated that some tents and propane tanks has been seen in the area where the fire occurred.
“Officers re-attended the area this morning to conduct a search in the daylight. No one was located and no injuries have been reported,” said the RCMP in an Oct. 25 statement. “The fire appears to have been accidental, and occurred when no one was present in the immediate area.”
Several loud explosions from a fire in Surrey, just across the river from New West. Excuse the language but the shockwave was startling. Hope everyone is ok! pic.twitter.com/SNh11v1r3H
