Today’s New West Farmers Market’s holiday market is cancelled because of weather, but Sunday’s event is still a go.
The New Westminster Farmers Market made the “difficult decision” on Friday to cancel today’s (Dec. 14) market because the weather forecast calls for strong winds. It noted that tents can be a hazard in high-speed wind gusts and can also be difficult to set up and maintain in windy conditions.
“The safety of our vendors, staff, volunteers, and customers are our highest priority,” said the cancellation notice. “We can’t confidently proceed without putting our community at risk.”
According to the City of New Westminster, a wind warning is in effect for Saturday mid-morning until early evening.
“The forecast anticipates gusts up to 100 km/hr and steady winds of 55-70 km/hr.,” said a notice posted on the city’s social media accounts. “Please be cautious of falling branches in treed areas. Report power outages to 604-239-6100.”

As of today, Sunday’s market is unaffected by the change.
Eighty local vendors and food trucks will be attending the market on Sunday, Dec. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at New Westminster City Hall.
Several other indoor markets and events scheduled for today are still taking place.
