A 1980 film starring the powerhouse trio Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin is being remounted for the stage by the Royal City Musical Theatre (RCMT) this spring.
And five Tri-City actors are cast in 9 to 5: The Musical, which runs from April 25 to May 11, 2025, at the Massey Theatre in New Westminster.
Coquitlam’s Chantelle Ward, Kadia Kindersley, Nicole Stevens and Tessa Trach, as well as Port Coquitlam resident Sophia Pollock, are in the production that has a score by Parton.
But it’s not the first RCMT gig for three of the Tri-City performers:
- Ward was in the company’s Mary Poppins and Crazy For You
- Stevens appeared in West Side Story
- Trach was nominated for an Ovation! award for her portrayal of Kathy in Singin’ in the Rain
Co-directed by Valerie Easton, a former Port Coquitlam resident, 9 to 5: The Musical “offers the perfect blend of hilarious hi-jinks and heartfelt camaraderie,” said co-director Chris Adams, who is taking over the RCMT artistic director role from Easton.
“Audiences will be rooting for these fearless women to stick it to the man with this story of female empowerment.”
The play stars Irene Karas Leoper as Violet, Maia Beresford as Doralee and Madeleine Suddaby as Judy as office co-workers in 1979 who battle their boss, Franklin Hart Jr. (played by Dustin Freeland).
9 to 5: The Musical debuted on Broadway in 2009 and received 15 Drama Desk Award nominations, four Tony Award nominations and a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theatre Album; in 2019, the musical appeared in London’s West End.
Tickets to see the RCMT version of 9 to 5: The Musical start at $29. Shows begin at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Massey Theatre (735 Eighth Ave., New Westminster). Visit the online box office for more details.
