Letter: Highrise development is driving Lower Mainland's economy

Construction in downtown New West is seen here in the fall of 2022. Here's one letter writer's take on highrise development.

Editor:

The towers that are being built in every city in the Lower Mainland are the whole economy of Canada. Forestry, mining, fisheries, manufacturing, pulp mills, etc. are all a very small and dying part of Canada's economy.

The cities are all depending on the developers' steady stream of income to survive. The immigration levels are way too high and too fast for any proper infrastructure to be built. Hospitals, schools etc.

Locals can't afford to live here, and there are no proper rent controls that are even close to being in line with worker's incomes. Foreign owners with big money are the new landlords.
