Community members are invited to join Mayor Patrick Johnstone in a weekly walk as part of the Walk30 Challenge.
Johnstone kicked off his weekly walk on Friday, April 14 with a walk in the Quayside neighbourhood.
“It was a pretty good experience today,” he told the Record. “I’m doing five of them between now and the middle of May.”
During the April 21 walk in the Uptown/Moody Park neighbourhoods, Johnstone hoped to chat with folks about what the city is doing to address climate change and to make the city more resilient to climate disruption.
Johnstone’s Wednesday, April 26 walk will take place in Queensborough, starting at Old Schoolhouse Park, 500 Ewen Ave. at 5 p.m. At that one, he’s hoping to hear from residents about the walkability in Queensborough.
The Week 4 walk, being held in conjunction with Jane’s Walk, is on Saturday, May 6 at 2 p.m., starting at Save-on-Foods in Sapperton. That one-hour walk includes a stroll to Hume Park and back.
The final walk is set for Friday, May 12 walk (1 to 2 p.m., starting at Queen’s Park Arena) where attendees will chat about fitness, recreation facilities in the park, and the mental health benefits of being in nature.
Walk30, a friendly walking competition between several cities, runs from April 10 to May 14. The challenge is designed to encourage and inspire people to walk more to improve overall health and wellness, to strengthen community connections, and to rethink how people get around.
While the challenge is already underway, there’s still time to sign up and start logging walking minutes for New West. For information, go to walk30.ca.
