The Vancouver Wooden Boat Society, located at Sapperton Landing Park in New Westminster, has received $3,000 to support future community projects.

A New Westminster-based boating group has been awarded some funding to support future projects.

The Vancouver Wooden Boat Society (VWBS) was given $3,000 on Thursday (Aug. 17) by Metro Vancouver as part of the regional district's latest round of cultural grants.

The money is set to contribute to VWBS' annual events and workshops, including its Wooden Boat Rendezvous this September.

The New West organization — located at 60 E Columbia St. on the north side of Sapperton Landing Park — was one of 63 arts and culture groups that received a combined $300,000 in grants.

"The recipients of this year's regional cultural grants create projects, shows, performances and events that connect our communities and enrich our lives in countless ways," said George V. Harvie, chair of Metro Vancouver's board of directors, in a news release.

"I am pleased that Metro Vancouver is able to support many organizations that have a long-standing commitment to serving the region and encourage the endeavours of new organizations."

This year, Metro Vancouver received more than 100 applications to seek a combined total of $900,000 in grants for proposed works.

Eligible organizations were able to apply for up to $10,000 each.

The VWBS operates out of the Wooden Boat Centre, which is classified as a heritage building and owned by the City of New Westminster.

It's primary goal is to educate and encourage local interest in heritage wooden boats by offering workshops on boatbuilding and woodworking.
