New Westminster gets a reprieve from fierce heat and bad air

Enjoy the cool temperatures overnight, because the heat is coming back with a vengeance.

A view of Sapperton Landing in the sunshine. The air remains clear, and New Westminster is seeing a brief reprieve from intense heat, with lows of 13 C expected tonight.

The air is clear, the breeze is blowing, and New Westminster is set to enjoy a brief reprieve from the intense summer-like heat.

Temperatures are sitting at 20 C in New Westminster as of about 10 a.m. on Tuesday, and this afternoon's high is projected to reach 24 C by 4 p.m. (though it may feel like 27 C). The overnight temperature could drop as low as 13 C tonight, bringing some welcome cooling to a week of high temperatures.

The reprieve will be brief, however — Wednesday's temperatures are expected to climb back up to 26 C (feels like 29 C), while Thursday is looking at a high of 27 (feels like 32 C).

In the meantime, there's another positive for New West residents: the air is still clear.

Though Metro Vancouver issued an air quality advisory yesterday for parts of Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley because of high concentrations of ground-level ozone, New West's air quality remains good.

As of 9 a.m. Tuesday, the air quality health index in New West is sitting at a 2, or low risk, with readings for ozone, fine particulate matter, nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide all coming in at low-risk levels.

You can monitor the air quality at Metro Vancouver's AirMap site.

But don't forget, that sun is still intense — take your hat, your sunscreen and your water bottle with you.
