The calendar flips to September next Sunday – but there is still plenty of summer fun to be had in New West in the week ahead.
Here’s a look at some of the things happening in New Westminster during the Aug. 26 to Sept. 1 week.
For council watchers:
New Westminster city council returns to council chambers on Monday, Aug. 26 for its first meeting since July 15. The agenda, taking place at 6 p.m., includes a range of items, including: requests for variances to the city’s construction noise bylaw; a preliminary report about an official community plan amendment and rezoning application for a site on Tanaka Court in Queensborough; and a presentation from YMCA BC about the child care resource and referral program. Rounding out the agenda are a number of previously discussed bylaws needing adoption, and three motions from council members:
- Councillors Ruby Campbell and Nadine Nakagawa have submitted a motion about enhancing commercial areas and corridors in New Westminster.
- Coun. Paul Minhas has submitted a motion about the fee structure of New West business licences and parks and recreation programs, as compared to other Metro Vancouver cities.
- Coun. Daniel Fontaine has submitted a motion regarding long-term funding to support the Walking School Bus program.
For community-minded folks
Shop from local vendors selling produce, meat, baked goods, artisan products and much more at the New West Farmers Market. It’s on Thursday, Aug. 29 from 3 to 7 p.m.in Tipperary Park (next to city hall). Activities and live music are part of the day’s fun.
For poetry fans
The final night of this summer’s Poetry in the Park series features Ronnie Dean Harris (Ostwelve) and SAPP ZINE, with host Aidan Chafe. In addition to two featured poets, the event includes an open mic component. This all-ages, free event is on Wednesday, Aug. 28 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Queen’s Park Bandshell.
For families with little ones
☀️Twilight Tots and Families gives families with little ones a chance to enjoy some quality family time while taking part in activities – in a picturesque setting. Hosted by New West Family Place, this event is on Monday, Aug. 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Westminster Pier Park.
☀️Summer Discovery Days features five days of programming at Fraser River Discovery Centre. Hands-on activities and story time will be based on the event’s food of the Fraser River basin theme. Summer Discovery Days runs from Thursday, Aug. 31 to Monday, Sept. 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fraser River Discovery Centre, 788 Quayside Dr. Admission rates apply.
For seniors
Community members aged 50 and older are invited to take part in Art in the Park, where this week’s activity is making mixed media journal cover with Sophie Davari. It’s on Tuesday, Aug. 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. in Moody Park, behind Century House. Art in the Park, led by local artists, is open to all levels and abilities.
For kids
Mornings by the River gives kids aged five to 12 a chance to play and create together. The free event, part of the City of New Westminster’s Summer Showcase, is on Tuesday, Aug. 27 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Westminster Pier Park.
For music lovers
Community members can enjoy an evening of music and fun (and lawn games) on New Westminster’s waterfront at Music by the River. This free, all-ages event is taking place at Westminster Pier Park on Wednesday, Aug. 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. The musical performance begins at 6 p.m. Bring a blanket or lawn chair, grab snacks or ice cream at the concession, and soak up the community vibe at the final Music by the River event of the summer.
For fans of the written word
Ruth Kozak will host the Royal City Literary Arts Society’s presentation of In Their Words, showcasing three featured presenters: Jessica Lee McMillan reading Rebecca Elson (a Canadian astronomer and writer); SheLa Nefertiti Morrison reading Sy Montgomery (a naturalist and non-fiction author, The Soul of an Octopus); and Alan Girling reading Mark Strand (a Canadian-American poet and essayist). It’s on Thursday, Aug. 29 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the New Westminster Public Library, 716 Sixth Ave. (downstairs).
