Letter: It's time to upgrade the Quayside dog park in New West

The Quay has more humans and dogs than ever before, and this writer says it's time to act accordingly.

Dogs in New West would be better served by an upgraded Quayside dog park, this letter writer says.

The Editor:

In response to downtown dog park options, may I suggest the "temporary" (for more than 15 years) Quayside off-leash dog park on Rialto be enlarged and upgraded to better serve the community?

The human and canine population on the Quay has increased substantially over the years. How about making this "temporary" dog park permanent, starting with:

  • an extension of the dog park west to the gravel road before the designated tidal marsh;
  • the removal of large metal drums adjacent to the west and north dog park fence;
  • refurbished benches (as on the promenade);
  • the addition of two to three feet of surface to reduce tree root injuries (I tripped over a tree root in the park last year; broke my hip and femur and required major surgery; and I know of several other trip-and-falls), and bring the surface level back up to the level of concrete slabs;
  • repair of concrete slabs; and
  • lighting installed.

Make use of and improve our much-used Quayside dog park.
