Letter: Time to enforce no-smoking rules at SkyTrain station?

Fines needed? "I inevitably become second-hand smoker almost every time I need to go through this station."

New West SkyTrain station is not only famous for pigeon drops, but also a popular place to smoke. I inevitably become second-hand smoker almost every time I need to go through this station.

Yesterday afternoon I entered the station from Eighth Street and saw a group of people chilling over their smoke right next to the escalator and fence with no-smoking signs. So I held my breath to go past them. As soon as I got off the escalator, another person was smoking right there.

We have no-smoking signs throughout the station but ironically, I mostly see people smoke next to those signs. I don't know whose responsibility it is to enforce this but they should look into this as it creates an image of people (in downtown New West) disrespecting the law.

If we have no resource for enforcement, maybe putting up warning sign of hefty fines might help deter some (if not all) of these smokers? I remember seeing something like that at the Coquitlam IKEA premises.
