Letter: Nuisance outside New West library has become a menace

The library "has long been a haven for our homeless, a quiet place where they can read, cool off or warm up and even dry their socks, but the people parking outside who are scaring and harassing library-goers are not them," reader says.

Patrons of the New Westminster Public Library shouldn't be subjected to harassment by "foul-mouthed folks" gathered nearby, a reader says.

Editor: I agree with the concerns of letter writers Karen Haley and Sarah Brewster over the open drug use and the foul-mouthed folks who congregate outside our beloved New Westminster Public Library.

These street people have gone beyond being a nuisance to becoming a menace. Many a day, I used to rest on one of the benches donated by four ladies (been so long, I forget their names), but now, I just rush into the library to avoid contact with these addicts.

I know the NWPL has long been a haven for our homeless, a quiet place where they can read, cool off or warm up and even dry their socks, but the people parking outside who are scaring and harassing library-goers are not them.

Our city council must start supporting the hard-working residents of New West and address this issue. Yes, the NWPL area is a public place, but are people allowed to scare and intimidate library users, young and old?
