Letter: 'An education in drug culture' outside New West library

"This is a sad reflection on the city of New Westminster," writes this resident.

Editor:

I recently visited New Westminster Public Library for the first time in several years and was shocked by what I witnessed outside the main door and the surrounding approach area.

A young girl was shooting up subsequently passing out. A male sat down beside her, checked on her, so she did not appear to be in need of medical attention. I witnessed another group exchanging money which appeared to be several drugs deals in progress.

Many people, some with young children, walked by en route to the library, obviously disturbed by what they were witnessing and not wanting to get involved, and hurried inside.

This is a sad reflection on the city of New Westminster when a trip to the public library turns out to be an education in drug culture. Are we not concerned enough to address what is happening right in the hub of our city with the potential to negatively impact our citizens, especially the young children who will visit the library over the summer months?
