This year's Recovery Day BC festival is on Saturday, Sept. 7 from noon to 5 p.m. in uptown New West.

Summer doesn’t officially end until Sept. 22 but the coming week marks the unofficial end of summer 2024 for many folks.

With students and teachers heading back to the classrooms this week, many families will start settling into their new routines. But that does not mean the summer fun is completely done for the year.

Here is a look at what’s happening in New West in the week ahead – from Monday, Sept. 2 until Sunday, Sept. 8.

For weather watchers

Sunny skies and warm days are coming up this week in New West. The forecast shows sunshine with some clouds, with daytime temperatures ranging from the early to high 20s throughout the week.

For meeting watchers

No city council, school board or police board meetings are scheduled for the coming week. With summer soon ending, meetings will return to their regular schedules this month.

For folks concerned about city services and/or taxation

You’ll have to act fast for this one: The City of New Westminster has been encouraging community members to complete an online survey about the 2025 budget – but the deadline is tomorrow (Monday, Sept. 2). You can read our story about it here and find the link to the survey (which should take about 15 minutes to complete) here.

For families looking for some end-of-summer fun

☀️The City of New Westminster is hosting Wet and Wild, which includes giant games, water balloons and other family-friendly activities. This free event is happening on Monday, Sept. 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Ryall Park spray park, 920 Ewen Ave.

☀️Fraser River Discovery Centre is hosting Summer Discovery Days on the Labour Day long weekend. With a focus on the various types of harvests of the Fraser River basin, the programming gives folks a chance to participate in a simulation activity of harvesting and weaving to understand how cedar is used by Indigenous communities across the Fraser River basin, attend a story time about the language of seasons, do a beading activity, and use a phenology wheel to learn about the seasonal changes related to harvests. It is happening on Monday, Sept. 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fraser River Discovery Centre, 788 Quayside Dr. Admission rates apply.

For foodies, shoppers and folks seeking a sense of community

The New West Farmers Market’s weekly market features activities and live entertainment, and – of course – vendors selling produce, meat, baked goods, artisan products and much more. It is on Thursday, Aug. 29 from 3 to 7 p.m.in Tipperary Park (next to city hall).
